The last edition, in , confirmed the Lisbon Architecture Triennale as one of the most prominent events of its kind, appealing to both experts and the general public. Today it seems to be natural to investigate the contemporary form and proportion of a column; to carefully consider the junctions among elements; to question the nature of cladding, as a project rather than as a consequence; to design expressive facades with images and typography; and to dress surfaces with patterns, motifs, textures, materials and colours. Whether this process is conscious or unconscious, or simply a reaction to a lack of means, it seems necessary to redefine the current threshold between ornament and decoration; to rethink what we can allow ourselves in our daily practice. Composed by a set of six collections, What is Ornament? It aims to learn from agricultural scientists, activists and designers who have consistently explored the hypothesis of a future of energy descent and its consequences, for the redesign and maintenance of living territories. Both the self-proposals and the nominations submit the same materials for evaluation. Can contemplation be rational? The hypothesis of this European project is based on the premise that local Heritage can be a strong and efficient driving force for the redefinition of unclaimed urban voids and a support for innovative urban renewal solutions. The selected proposals will be part of the central exhibition Natural Beauty, in dialogue with a photographic series of iconic examples of architectural rationality. Economy of means has as much to do with the process as it does with the results. The four editions of the international forum organized by the Triennale are among the most significant of its initiatives. The large number of activities initiated throughout its 10 years of existence is the best witness to this commitment. Construction is essential, directly engaged with the spatiality and expressivity of the architectural object. How can ornament be reconsidered today as an integral part of architecture? The set of proposals is made available to the jury, whose composition includes seven personalities from various continents, who select the list of finalists as well as the winner or the winner. Inner Space also identifies how architectural imagination is capable of nourishing other disciplines: from art to videogames, virtual reality, comic books and forensic investigation. Economy of repetition leads to typology and interest in ordinary architecture and the city. What about redefining architecture s rationality and economy of means today? It aims to trigger a reflection on these seemingly antagonistic concepts and explore the ways in which virtual reality technologies can enable designers to create immersive expressive experiences. Can the aesthetic be efficient and the immediate be mental? Economy of measurements leads to surreal poetics and mass housing. This exhibition, part of the Lisbon Triennale under the theme The Poetics of Reason, seeks to contribute to the definition of the specificity of architectural rationality, as do the four other that make up the event. Taking the Country s Side is a reflexive and didactic attempt to reconnect architecture and agriculture, and to emphasize lessons that contemporary architects and urbanists might draw from this school of thought and action. It is an investigation of form in all its dimensions. As architects, we can decide to concentrate our efforts on the ornamental apparatus in order to maximize results. There is also a call for self-proposals. As a matter of fact, it reacts to what seems to be an ongoing fresh, self-confident and joyful return of ornament, intended in its pre-digital sense, beyond its superficial iteration of the early s. By trying to find possible answers, the exhibition shows the complexity of a multifaceted narrative, which looks into the very essence of ornament. Inner Space regards imagination, and more precisely, architectural imagination, as the critical process that makes the interplay between the two realms possible, creating the potential for a space to be inhabited and explored in itself. Agroecology and permaculture have evolved useful concepts and strategies for imagining a post-industrial technology based on a radical economy of energy and material resources. Through rationality we can reach a contemporary interpretation of the world and build a theory of society, this project being a tool for reaching in a domestic way those objectives, exploring the closest scale between its creators and people. Always committed to excellence and independence, the Lisbon Triennale team started preparing its fifth edition in by issuing an open call for curatorship. This cycle aims to create an energetic and specialized composition of conversations with three approaches: a one-hour presentation, with a theoretical approach by an academic, a conversation between two or more architects or designers, with an intensive thirty minute rhythm. This collective moment in the construction of the imagination intertwines with an individual one, developed by each author. Past and present are on display through archival photographs and drawings, revealing comparative examples which are more or less like the display solutions found in the Museum itself.
